Going to take the leap, or at least try!

jimnyc on Feb-21-2008

I’ve tried quitting smoking many times over the years and have discussed as much on our forums. Each and every time I have failed. I’m not sure if it was because of the physical urges, mental or if I just wasn’t ready to quit yet. I know I’m ready now, and I honestly want to quit 100%, and although that gives me a leg up in the process it is FAR from making the process any more successful.

I’m going to try it “cold turkey” this time. My prior attempts have been with the patch, nicotine gum, lozenges, medication… These are all crutches and can be quite expensive. And while they help, they also make the process linger on longer. My thinking this time around is that yes, I’ll suffer, but it’ll be painful for awhile but hopefully be quicker without a crutch giving me that “fix”.

Do I think I’ll win this time? Probably not! I’m just being honest. I’m going to take all the appropriate steps - get rid of cigarettes altogether, remove ashtrays and anything that reminds me of smoking, plan alternative routines, have candy/fruit/snacks available to eat instead of reaching for a smoke. But it’s a tough road. Those who have never smoked before don’t realize how hard it is to quit.

I just want to remain as active as possible to keep my mind occupied and targeted on other things. One day at a time, one hour at a time. I know the end result will be worth it, but can I get there finally?

So long as you don’t believe you will succeed, you will be right.

If you want to stop cold turkey the best way is to ensure you are in a smoke free area where you cannot just skip out for a five minute smoke break. Working at a full service gas station ……..

However it goes, good luck. And if at first you don’t succeed, blog it, kick it, kill it, and do it again. No surrender dude.

You got this by the ass Jim. I can feel your desire to kick it and that is what it takes. I quit after 20 years of it and other than gaining some weight, have felt better than I had forever. Stay strong man, every time you have the desire to smoke, think about your kid losing his dad way too early. Thats what did it for me. Good Luck!!!
